What We Do: Advocacy, Programmes, Projects

Advocacy

Advocacy

The Literary Renaissance Foundation actively campaigns against the devaluation of intelligence in Nigeria and works to be the catalysts for the emergence of a new generation of thought-leaders and influencers, who love books and learning, across all sectors.

School Visits

We would like to visit schools to talk on the value and importance of reading. We may start with schools where we have book clubs and gradually reach out to others. Reading as a culture can be easier achieved through the support of our schools.

Programmes

Reading and Spelling Competition

This is a specially designed competition for Elementary School students to encourage reading. Unlike contemporary spelling Bee competitions where a list of words is provided to the participants to prepare for the contests, we would be providing a selection of not more than 3 books per stage of the competition. The words for each stage will be pulled from the selection of books.

Book Clubs (The 10/10 Challenge)

This is also an elementary school project. We would like to work in collaboration with Public and Private schools to drive this initiative. Our goal is to have book clubs set up in schools same as other extra-curricular activities the students engage in. We will have a teacher as our liaison, and in collaboration with each school, can run a weekly book club where the children, for about 40mins to 1 hour can read and discuss a pre-selected book. The book club will also form the bedrock for our 10/10 Challenge; a programme that challenges children to read at least 10 great works of literature before they turn 10. Participants and winners will get prizes.

Reading and Writing Competition (The 16/16 Challenge)

Our target here will be the Secondary School Students. Students are encouraged to read 16 great works of literature before they turn 16. As they read, they will also be challenged to open a journal documenting their thoughts, feelings, opinions on each work and upload some of these on a dedicated platform. We will also encourage them to add multi-media files to their uploads like photos, drawings, audio and video recordings.

Annual Gala and Award Ceremony

Our annual fund-raising event will also double as an award and prize giving ceremony where the winners of all our events will be hosted to a special dinner. Sponsors, partners, other stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians will not be left out.

We are also proposing a Literary Icon Award be part of the programme for the evening. Where a literary Icon of Nigerian descent is celebrated and honoured for their contributions to the arts.

Projects

The Modern Shakespeare Project

This project serves a dual-function; the first is to present the classical works of William Shakespeare in modern, easy-to-read-and-enjoy style. The second is to engage students in our tertiary institutions as the developers of these works.

Here is how it will work: a selection of 12 of Shakespeare’s plays is presented to participants who are required to pick, read, and rewrite the plays as prose and as modern-day pieces. The winners will have their stories published, in addition to other prizes.

Literary BookFest

A 3-day event of fun, enlightenment, reading, and engaging with like minds. The book fest will have the regular exhibitions by publishers and other book sellers. It will also have a symposium or two. Then there will be a literary fair where individuals can come dressed as their favourite fictional characters. Vendors and Exhibitors will not be left behind as each event will have a theme which will determine how stalls, exhibition stands, and the venue will be decorated.
